The end of an era: Sridevi cremated with state honours in Mumbai

The last rites of Bollywood icon Sridevi, whose sudden death on Sunday left family, friends and fans in disbelief and grief, were conducted on Wednesday in Mumbai at the Vile Parle Seva Samaj Crematorium and Hindu Cemetery.

Bollywood turned up in full strength to pay tribute to India's first female superstar. Fans from across the country too thronged to catch a last glimpse of the icon.

Draped in a red-and-gold kanjeevaram, the body was brought to the Vile Parle crematorium.

Full state honours were accorded, including a police gun salute. The body, wrapped in the Tricolour, was carried in an AC truck.

Earlier the body was kept at the Celebration Sports Club in Lokhandwala for the public to pay homage. A host of Bollywood stars had turned up for the condolence meeting and prayer ceremony that was held there.

The actress accidentally drowned in a hotel bathtub in Dubai on Saturday. Her body was brought b ack to India on Tuesday night and taken to brother-in-law Anil Kapoor's house.
